They Pulled off a Garden Wedding in the City

The task? Plan a lush, organic, Napa-inspired wedding…and do it in the middle of New York City. Luckily, floral genius DESIGNS BY AHN didn’t even flinch but instead took their vision and ran with it. The result is an urban garden party photographed by Sawyer Baird and there’s a whole lot more this way in The Vault.

From the Bride…When it came to planning our own wedding, my husband and I knew we didn’t want to get married at a banquet hall. As a native Californian, it only made sense to be surrounded by nature but since my husband wanted hard liquor served at our wedding, a Napa venue was out of the question. We also found it difficult planning a wedding across the states amidst our busy work schedules. I was then recommended by two of my coworkers to check out the Foundry. The Foundry was definitely a stunning unique space amidst a desolate area. What drew me in was the lush ever growing ivy wrapped around the exterior of the old restored building and inside the greenhouse. I never imagined finding a garden venue in the city. Even though my husband and I had our concerns of the limited capacity the space could hold it helped us narrow our guest count to our closest family and friends.

After selecting the venue, everything else fell into place. I am usually drawn to neutral, organic and very simple aesthetics. Since the venue is naturally beautiful in itself, it allowed me to keep decorations minimally romantic with lots of greenery, candles, and ivory flowers. It tied back to my flowing gown, the bridesmaids’ long chiffon dresses and lush ribboned bouquets. We opted out of the bridal party prom look and had the groomsmen in classic dark navy suits while my husband wore a midnight blue and black tuxedo. My florist, Victoria of Designs by Ahn took my vision and created something more than what I dreamed it would look.

My amazing calligrapher, Esther Clark, whose style I adore, created all the delicate organic paper pieces for the day. Our DJ, James Mulry played our favorite rock songs during cocktail hour and then uptempo beats after dinner. With the help of our caterer everything was cohesive, lush and absolutely beautiful. Our wedding definitely looked like a secret garden party and served as an amazing backdrop for photos.

Planning for the wedding can at times be overwhelming especially during an extreme work schedule but it was well worth it in the end because we got to celebrate the love we have for each other with all of the wonderful people in our lives ALL on the same coast and city at the same time. And there may never be a time when that happens again. We only wished the party lasted a few more hours.
