Basing their decor on a high school dance (think the dance in the gym from the movie Grease), Jacky and Wes wanted to celebrate their big day with their favourite meal – brunch! Surrounded by paper streamers and disco balls, the couple kept a free and fun vibe while partying with the people they love.
The couple had eleven groomsmen and bridesmaids, ensuring their friendship group were all part of their celebration. With an emphasis on having fun, they wanted everyone to feel relaxed and comfortable.
Jacky told us, “We didn’t want to make anyone involved wear a random dress or suit they would never wear again. Everyone picked out what they wanted to wear, as long as it was all black. They could wear any shoes or accessories they wanted.”
The ceremony was short and sweet, with a nod to the couple’s love of book, movie and TV fandoms. Jacky told us, “We tried to include as much as possible! The bridal party walked down the aisle to Still by Seinabo Say, from the TV show New Girl (the song Schmitt walks down the aisle to when he marries CeCe). My processional was Yazoo Only You from the movie Can’t Hardly Wait. Wes walked into the reception to the theme song from our favourite podcast Your Mom’s House. Our first dance was a mash up of New Found Glory’s cover of Crazy for You and You’re the One That I Want, from Grease. We also had signs around the place with quotes from the TV show Parks and Recreation.”
Saving money by creating DIY projects ensured the couple’s $15,000 budget stretched as far as it could, with Jacky and her friends getting creative. She explained, “All the décor was DIYed by the me and my friends! We made all of the streamers that hung. The vases on all of the centrepieces where thrifted and then painted. We ordered all the babies breath and dried flowers online and spray painted them. All of the bouquets and centre pieces were made by one of the bridesmaids of the wedding!”
Playing cards replaced a traditional guest book, with guests asked to sign or write a message on a card. Jacky explained, “We love to play gin rummy on Friday nights so now we can play with our guest book!”
There was a real focus on sharing the day with their best friends, and that extended to the final song of the night when they all danced to Jacky concluded, “Our friend group ends almost every event with a last song Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks. It was a blast singing the party out to that jam to finish the night.”
