From Amy SandersonDesigning with local flowers injects an element of serendipity into every arrangement, since availability varies from week to week and year to year. This bouquet represents the fragrant sweet spot, usually only a week or two long, between spring and summer, when the last of the peonies and mock orange overlap with the first of the summer roses and sweet peas. To fill out the lush bouquet, I cut smaller flowers from the garden, such as astrantia, allium and dicentra to layer in. But it wasn’t until I discovered my friend had some precious mock orange left in her garden, that the bouquet came to life. For it’s the mock orange branches, along with a few sweet pea vines, that soften the structurally dominant viburnum leaves and peonies, into a fragrant, diaphanous cloud – perfect for an early summer bride.
